Gas or diesel engine — which is best for your business?
Gas engine strengths: Pickups with gas-powered engines generally have a lower upfront purchase price and cost less to maintain. They’re easier to refuel due to gas being widely available at fuel stations. Additionally, gas-powered pickups are best used in short-trip, high-idle operations with frequent starts and stops. They’re also an option for fleets that may struggle with diesel-engine emissions failures.
The downside to gas-powered engines is that they can wear down quickly from heavy use or being consistently overloaded when towing and hauling.
Diesel engine strengths: Pickups with diesel-powered engines serve as the backbone for heavy-duty construction projects with higher torque, lower RPMs and less engine strain under heavier loads. They perform best when the engine can be fully warmed up before being used or while traveling long distances with fewer stops. Diesel engines generally have longer recommended time intervals between oil changes.
One of the drawbacks of using diesel engines is the need for additional emissions‑related maintenance. For example, diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) levels must be properly maintained to help ensure emissions control systems function effectively and help reduce harmful exhaust gases.
