Order to Delivery. 5 GM Brands Fastest in Survey of Order to Delivery Times.

According to a recent Automotive Fleet Magazine survey, five GM vehicles were fastest when it comes to order-to-delivery times (OTD) to fleet customers. In its October edition, the magazine reported the survey findings on the issue that many business customers say is critical to determining where to place orders for their next company vehicles.

"Companies who use vehicles in their operations, consider them to be tools," said Pat Wellinski, manager of GM's fleet forecasting group, "The faster they can get their new vehicles in service, the quicker they can provide service to their customers." Getting the new vehicles in service quicker also helps these companies obtain higher prices for their used vehicles when they remarket them, added Wellinski.

Eight Fleet Management Companies supplied data for Automotive Magazine's 11th annual survey. The survey tracked deliveries of 159,349 vehicles in the 2010 model year, representing 86 models. The top five, according to the survey:

ModelAvg. Delivery Days
2010 Chevrolet Cobalt44
2010 Chevrolet Avalanche45
2010 GMC Acadia46
2010 Chevrolet Impala47
2010 Chevrolet Malibu50

In 2009, GM's OTD times - like the industry - rose to higher than normal levels. Several factors, including rail car shortages, quality holds and dealership consolidation affected most automakers. For Wellinski and the GM Fleet and Commercial Operations team, the challenge was to overcome these hurdles, while at the same time the company was introducing new models, which were in short supply.

"There wasn't a magic solution involved. It boiled down to a lot of individuals looking at these challenges creatively and finding solutions to meet our customer's needs," Wellinski said. "While we're glad to receive this type of recognition, we know that was yesterday, and we're continuing to look for ways to improve."
